|
Every six months we recruit up to 30 street or disadvantaged youths (16-22 years old) who come from extremely difficult life circumstances. These include poverty, abandonment, orphaned, abused, involved in exploitative employment; neglect, conflict with the law, parents with addictions, parents with mental health problems and a range of other troubled backgrounds.
We tap into a wide network of sources to identify target youths. The trainee recruitment process usually takes up to three months depending on the number of applications received.
After collecting information on potential trainees we invite them to our Open Day where they receive more information about living and training with us. They also fill out a questionnaire about themselves and sit basic literary and mathematics tests. We then visit the homes of suitable applicants and interview those who have passed this stage.
Successful candidates are invited to four weeks trial period with us and are provided with initial health checks, vaccinations, uniforms, laundry, meals, accommodation in shared housing and a monthly training allowance. Candidates who pass the orientation become official trainees. The Program A unique aspect of our program is the combination of personal development with skills development. Trainees often start off as unskilled, insecure and low self esteemed individuals, however as they live and train with us they begin to transform themselves. They become better educated through our training and English programs, more skilled through our 36 life skills workshops, and more confident through developing friendships and support networks. Our life skills workshops include healthy living, personal hygiene, anger management, personal financial budgeting, sex education, first aid, communication and interpersonal skills etc. Being more ‘well rounded’ (possessing both personal and professional skills), our trainees become responsible, employable, self sustainable young people.
